Why broccoli isn't worth the fight with your kids

"Can you eat 10 apples a day? Maybe 2 pounds of Broccoli? I know I can't."

Most Americans consume about 10 to 15 grams of fiber a day.

This is half what the FDA recommends:

  • 25g of fiber for females 
  • 38g of fiber for males

You may have heard people suggest that you eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables every day to meet this challenge. But how many fruits and vegetables would you have to eat to hit your recommended daily amount of fiber?

I checked the USDA database for nutrition facts and found:

  • 100g apples contain 2.4g fiber
  • 100g broccoli contain 2.6g fiber
  • 100g banana contain 2.6g fiber
  • 100g strawberry contain 2g fiber
  • 100g kale contain 2.6g fiber

Can you eat 10 apples every day to get your recommended intake of fiber? 

Maybe 2 pounds of Broccoli?
